The Munroe Lady Cats softball team had their best chance to beat 4A Leon High School for the first time in softball but after 10 innings of play, it was not meant to be.
The team had several opportunities, sometimes with two outs and Leon with their last at-bat at the plate, but errors and timely hits denied the team the win.
Leon scored first, with two runs in their first two at bats. Munroe then scored two runs in their top of the third to tie the score for a short time. Leon scored one in the bottom of the third to again take the lead.
Munroe then scored two runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings while giving up one to Leon and at the end of six innings, the Bobcats led 4-3. With two outs, Munroe looked to hold for the win, but an infield error gave Leon the tying run.
Neither team could push across a run in the eighth inning, and the teams entered the ninth inning knotted at 4-4.
The Bobcats scored one in the top of the ninth but, again, they allowed Leon to score one more on a misplayed ball in the outfield. Enter — 10th inning.
In the 10th inning, Munroe was scoreless but Leon managed to score the winning run in their half of the 10th, ending the 3 1/2-hour game.
Jerri Sloan got the loss for Munroe. The right-handed sophomore pitched all 10 innings, striking out four and allowing nine hits.
Munroe tallied nine hits but left 13 runners stranded. Hannah Wilde, a freshman shortstop, had three hits. Sloan added two hits. Maddey Pappadakis and Wilde scored two runs each.
The team is 6-6 on the season and hosts North Bay Haven this week, before heading to FAMU on Thursday and Vernon for a doubleheader Friday.
