The East Gadsden High School Jaguars leaves the West Gadsden Panthers scoreless after posting a 21-0 win last Friday night in the cross-county rivals’ Superintendent’s Cup season opener.
East Gadsden’s first score came with 5:35 on the clock after a big catch, which was followed up with a quarterback-keeper from Donterrius Garrett. The point after was good, to make the score 7-0. EGHS was stopped on fourth-and-10 in the red zone and West Gadsden took over on its own 1-yard line, but a fumble caused a safety for the Jags, leading to a 9-0 game.
For a moment it seemed that West Gadsden had found its groove, as freshman Montoya Francis got a big sack with 6:20 left in the second quarter. But just one play later, Antwain Matthews of East Gadsden made it look like spectators were watching ESPN’s Play of the Week as he made a one-hand interception.
With 3:06 left in the first half, the Jaguars capitalized on another interception and took it all the way for a touchdown, but the point after was blocked, making the score 15-0.
Once again it seemed as if the sun would shine for the Panthers when Shermonta Hollins had a 40-yard reception that unfortunately ended in a fumble.
East Gadsden ended its bout by scoring a touchdown on a blocked punt, but missed the point after to seal the game at 21-0.
