aon Thursday, Dec. 2, the East Gadsden High School boys basketball team started the season off right with a commanding victory over the Blountstown Tigers. The Jaguars stingy defense and full court press were enough to frustrate Blountstown into multiple turnovers, allowing East to jump off to a 17-10 first quarter lead, and never look back.
Blountstown’s only saving grace was an excellent performance beyond the 3 point arc from shooting guards #24 Will Rogers and #30 Saad Farooqi. The Tigers showed resolve and were mounting quite the comeback in the second quarter until East Gadsden’s #23 S. Nay slammed in two monstrous (and nearly back to back) dunks that brought the Jaguar gym to life. All momentum swung back over to East for the remainder of the game. The Jaguars also had an excellent performance from forward #32 S. Holt. Holt was vital in securing a presence in the paint for the Jags, which Blountstown had no answer for and allowed him to dominate the boards.
The second half was overshadowed by Blountstown’s desperation to find offense against the Jaguar defense, relying heavily on the once hot three point shooters. East was able to apply pressure to the guards and finished the game off strong, closing out the fourth quarter with a 79-60 lead.
With this win the Jaguars established a foundation for an excellent upcoming season. East’s next game is against Chiles High this upcoming Thursday, December 9.
SIDE NOTE: East Gadsden’s junior varsity team also secured a 57-45 over the tigers.
