Renowned vocalist Pam Laws will perform at the Sara May Love Gallery at the Gadsden Arts Center in Quincy May 14. The evening will begin with a wine and cheese reception at 7 p.m., followed by the concert, and end with dessert and coffee.

Tickets for the event are $37 each or two fro $70. Call 875-4866 to make your reservations or stop by the center at 13 N. Madison St.

Proceeds will benefit the center’s after school and summer education programs.

The Gadsden County Transportation Disadvantaged Coordinating Board will meet May 14 at 2 p.m. at the Quincy Library. The meeting is open to the public and will feature a discussion on the board’s service p••••lan.

Greensboro Kiwanis Club will honor Gadsden County veterans with a commemorative veterans cross, to be placed in Greensboro on U.S. Highway 12 at 11 a.m. on May 15. A representative from the governor’s office will speak during the event. For more information, call 875-8714.

A scholarship award banquet will be held for the Willie Ruth Williams Scholarship Fund on May 16 at 6 p.m. at the Simon Scott Senior Citizens Center in Quincy. The scholarship will be presented to a Gadsden County student who intends to pursue a career as a math or math-related teacher. Williams was a teacher in Gadsden County for more than 38 years.

Sycamore United Methodist Church is sponsoring a pilau lunch to help raise funds for repairs at the Centenary Camp in Gretna, and to help carry on the camp’s ministry. The Quincy Police Department, in conjunction with the Florida Highway Patrol and other local agencies, will conduct a comprehensive roadside safety checkpoint May 22 from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. on U.S. Highway 90 between East Pavillion and West Pavillion streets, eastbound only. Narcotics canines will be on site, and there will be a DUI, driver’s license and vehicle inspection checkpoint.

The ninth annual Chattahoochee Challenge Boat Race will be held at River Landing Park on the banks of the Apalachicola River June 6-7. Daily admission is $5 for adults and children over 6 years; children under 6 get in free. Gates open at 10 a.m. Food and beverage vendors will be on site. Free parking and attendees are asked to bring lounge chairs. The event is promoted by the Florida Outdoor Racing Association and the city of Chattahoochee.
