The Keeping Independent Seniors Safe program kickoff brunch scheduled for Dec. 18 has been rescehduled for Jan. 29 at 10:30 a.m. at the A.O. Shelfer National Guard Armory. Florida Secretary of Elder Affairs Doug Beach will be the speaker. The brunch is free, but because of limited seating, tickets are required. Due to the upcoming winter season, the Gadsden County Chamber of Commerce is accepting donations of new and/or gently-used and clean blankets to distribute to Gadsden County service organizations for families and elderly citizens in need. Participants in the Fall After Hours are strongly encouraged to bring at least one blanket of any size to the event. Cleaning out a closet? Gently-used and clean comforters, bedspreads, baby blankets and throw covers are also welcome. Blankets can also be brought to the chamber office located at 208 North Adams St. in Quincy (call 627-9231 first).

Gadsden County Humane Society is in urgent need of monetary donations to help cover the cost of animals being served by its program, which currently services more than 120 animals, at a cost of $1,500 to $3,000 a month in vet car, food and other costs. Donations are tax deductible and can be made via the paypal link online at www.gadsdenhumane.org or by mailing a check to GCHS, P.O. Box 1268, Havana, FL 32333. GCHS does not receive any county, state or federal funding. All funding is generated through donations and fundraisers. The society will host a pet adoption booth at PetSmart in Tallahassee Dec. 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. See photos and descriptions of adoptable pets at www.gadsdenhumane.org.

Gadsden County Coalition for Change is sponsoring a Bucks for Books campaign. Residents are asked to send $10 (tax deductible) to the Friends of the Library at 732 Pat Thomas Parkway, Quincy, FL 32351. Donations will make more books available to local kids.

    Gadsden County Public Library's new bookmobile is currently providing limited service to schools, apartment complexes, and senior citizens centers.  A complete schedule of visits will resume after the holidays.  Call the Quincy library at 627-7106 for details.

The Gadsden County Medicine Chest is in need of health care items such as beds, bedside tables, over-bed tables, bedside chairs, bedside commodes, walkers, canes and crutches. The items will be refurbished and given to those in need of them, with the understanding that the items will be returned when no longer needed.

Volunteers are also needed for refurbishing items, as well as corporate and individual sponsors.
