Allegedly Speaking...

-A A +A

We recently  had to “fall back”...and we all rejoiced at the thought of an extra hour of sleep. Or maybe that was just me.

Daylight savings time...who the heck thought that one up? According to the history books, it was a dude with some tiny glasses and a bad haircut – Benjamin Franklin. He thought it up, but it wasn’t implemented until 1907. It was made law in the U.S. in 1918.

But why do we do it? DST came about as a way to adjust clocks during the summer months when days are longer, to make better use of daylight hours. Adjustments were made during both world wars to save on fuel needed for artificial light.

I don’t know about all that...I just always remember to “spring forward, fall back.”

I got excited when the leaves began to turn and the weather got chilly in recent weeks. I said, more than once, “It finally actually feels like football weather.” There’s just something wrong about wearing shorts and flip-flops to a ballgame.

Even though the days are shorter, I am thankful that it actually does seem like fall. I love this time of year, when we begin to lean toward the holidays. Now that we’ve made it past Halloween, Thanksgiving is just around the corner and before you know it, we’ll be putting up our Christmas decorations.

I’m not sure exactly when it happens, but at this time of year, people seem to slow down and appreciate things – and each other – a little more. Maybe it’s the holiday spirit...maybe it’s a ploy to get what they want for Christmas. Whatever the reason, I still enjoy it.

We all seem to think of others more than ourselves. Children, although they’re constantly thinking about what they want Santa to leave under the tree, are more aware of their behavior... “He sees you when you’re sleeping...he knows when you’re awake; He knows if you’ve been bad or good...”

Kind of creepy when you think about it but it kept us all in check as kids.

Ahh...the holiday season is officially underway. Let the shopping-wrapping-giving-returning-what-you-don’t-like frenzy begin...

Good thing we’ve got this extra hour to sleep in...
